This year's AVAS Bird 'n' Nature Fest, held under the pavilion at
the Pueblo Greenway and Nature Center, 5200 Nature Center Rd. The
event is FREE and open to the public. Informational booths,
children's activities, and registration for door prizes begin at 9:00
and continue until about 2:00 in the afternoon. Agencies such as the
Colorado Division of Wildlife, Environmental groups and
nature-related businesses will have displays with knowledgeable
people staffing them. Come and enjoy the day under the fall foliage
along the river. Bring friends and family!
Please join us for a fun-filled day of tours and activities. Take
in a sunrise or sunset tour to view snow geese, sandhill cranes, and
other waterfowl, watch the birds while enjoying a waterside, country
breakfast, go on a guided nature walk, and/or visit local and
historic sites of interest.
Late in February, sandhill cranes, the San Luis Valley's oldest
visitors, begin their annual trek from south to north, stopping off
near the Monte Vista National Wildlife Refuge to load up on fuel. For
millions of years, the sandhills have been spending their "Spring
Break" in Colorado's Valley of the Cranes and more recently, wildlife
watchers have been drawn to wonder at this phenomenal natural
spectacle.
The Front Range Birding Company celebrates International Bird Day
with a full day of fun and events. The raptor conservation group
HawkQuest will be a featured attraction from 11AM to 1PM as they
present a live Bald Eagle, Barn Owl, Peregrine Falcon and Harris Hawk
for display. You will be able to get up close and personal with each
of these exquisite birds of prey. Their expert trainers will actually
fly a Harris Hawk for all to see at 12 Noon.
*Local artists and craftsmen will
have an outdoor crafts fair. Local park rangers and the Audubon
Society of Greater Denver will man educational booths and offer
interesting and intriguing programs for both adults and children. At
2PM the 2nd annual "Dove Race For Youth" will take place as up to 200
white homing pigeons will be released for local charities. These
doves will "race" back to their home lofts in Lakewood, CO. Prizes
will be given to the sponsors of the winning birds. While the crowd
awaits the race results, local bluegrass bands will perform live on
stage.
